VTG Rare Poster Johny Horizon Dept. of Interior Pounce on Polution Snoopy Schulz – $199. Find it on eBay (affiliate link).
Of all the Snoopy Johnny Horizon memorabilia, this image is definitely my favorite. Snoopy is posing as a vulture, inviting you to “Pounce on Pollution”. When I first found a small assortment of Johnny Horizon materials years back on eBay, I was fascinated. Johnny Horizon started in 1968 only lasted about a decade. He was the mascot for the U.S. Department of the Interior, encouraging kids to pick up litter. Woodsy Owl was far more recognizable when I was a kid in the 1980’s. “Give a hoot, don’t pollute!” was certainly a catchier phrase than any Johnny had.
But how did Charles Schulz get involved with Johnny Horizon? I’ve no idea. If someone has that info, please send it along. All I have are pieces I’ve gathered from looking at online auctions. It seems there was a classroom kit from 1972 that included posters, bookmarks, and a “Honor Roll” poster for celebrating kids’ achievements. What they were meant to achieve, we may never know. Perhaps they’re still working on it.
How much is a Snoopy Johnny Horizon Poster worth?
While Snoopy Johnny Horizon posters appear sporadically on eBay, they pop up from time to time. I was lucky enough to get my set still in near mint condition from a fellow Peanuts collector. While these are few and far between, there don’t seem to be many collectors vying for them and prices don’t go very high. In mint condition, I would expect to pay around $5-15 for this poster. The poster presented in this listing is in terrible used condition. No doubt, it was on display for many years and kept for its wonderful image of Snoopy. While its condition makes it a hard sell at $200, a more important element is holding it back. Searches! As an avid collector, I’m always on the lookout for new Johnny Horizon items and I’d have a hard time finding this one with the misspelled “Johny” in the title.
