Vintage Peanuts Charlie Brown Lunch Box “Winter Holiday”Still in cellophane wrap – $225. Find it on eBay (affiliate link).
I call these lunch boxes “novelty lunch boxes.” Why? They’re generally smaller and thinner than regular lunch boxes, plus they’re generally filled with candy. No parent would let their child have a lunch box full of candy for lunch. These are fun gifts at the holidays, filled with generic candy only a sugar-crazed child would eat. They cannot contain a normal sized lunch and will probably be either filled with snacks or odds and ends that children pick up.
How much is a Peanuts Christmas Candy Lunch Box worth?
Whether it’s complete with candy, or not, I would estimate that a mint condition novelty lunchbox would sell for $6-$15, depending on design.
Is the candy collectible? Alone, obviously not. Generic candy could be easily replaced for authenticity. The candy’s presence is an indicator that the item is completely unused in this case. Still wrapped in the cellophane is a plus in that it keeps the box free from minor scratches. For my own collecting, I wouldn’t seek out a cellophane-wrapped version if I already had a mint condition unwrapped lunch box. The only time candy may help an item’s value is if it is Peanuts character shaped.
Should you even keep the candy? Food can attract pests. If you do keep the candy, consider how easy it is bugs and critters to get into it. Trust me, its horrible! Chocolates, peanuts and caramels should be eaten immediately, and not just because they’re delicious. Some items, like hard candies, will probably be ok if sealed completely in plastic. I always figure if the apocalypse comes, my Peanuts collection will have some nice treats if I survive and I’m desperate for starlite mints or smarties. But until that day, ICK! Don’t eat that old candy!
