Usually, this weekly article is about amateur eBay sellers. However, this week I turn my writings to a long standing professional business that knows its collectibles… except in this case. Featured on their site is a Snoopy night light described as “6” tall figural vinyl lamp with red light bulb inside. Black facial and red tie paint accents. c. 1960s. No copyright. Lt. age toning but vinyl is still pliable and lamp works. VF. Scarce.” Surely, they’ve heard of eBay? A quick search brings up twelve entries featuring this exact same Snoopy night light, including one in its original packaging(affiliate link). Scarce? Good Grief! Who let the dog night lights out?
A boxed Snoopy night light is just what we need to unravel more of the mystery. It was made by Nan-San Industries in Massachusetts. It was definitely made after 1963, since there is a zip code on the box. Other than a few facts about the warmth, pleasure and comfort the night light brings, there isn’t the key information that makes this a true Snoopy. Without the packaging, we might assume the essential copyright dates and “United Feature Syndicate” sticker or markings are missing. However, the box would certainly feature that information somewhere if it truly was a licensed Peanuts item. Other indications that this isn’t a true Snoopy is the neckerchief and the missing black ears and back spot.
How much is a Snoopy Night Light by Nan San worth?
How much would a Peanuts collector pay for a random dog night light from the 1960’s? Not much, hence the reason they are not scarce in the online market landscape. I sold the one I had for like $4 and I was surprise anyone actually wanted it. This random dog was probably a great Snoopy substitute back in the 1960’s and probably brings back memories for children of that era. However, there are plenty of other legitimate Peanuts items I can spend my money on!
