Peanuts Stanford Class of 1966

The Stanford University Class of 1966 asked Charles Schulz to give a speech and attend their ball. However, Charles Schulz didn’t feel up to the task. Instead, he gave the Class of ’66 his blessing to use Charlie Brown as their mascot and a trio of original drawings. Fifty years later, the Stanford gang celebrated their reunion with table decorations and buttons featuring their mascot, Charlie Brown. Thanks to Bridget for share this little piece of Peanuts history with us!

Deep Dive into Peanuts Stanford Class of 1966

This Peanuts Find of the Week features a unique piece of Charlie Brown history connected to a Stanford University class reunion. Bridget shared these party favors from a 2016 reunion, including decorations and a button that recreated artwork originally used for a 1966 senior ball. The event, titled “Charlie Brown Goes Formal,” featured Charlie Brown as the class mascot after Charles Schulz gave the students permission to use his drawings for their dance publicity.

The original event was held on Friday, June 10, 1966, at the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco. Students invited Charles Schulz to attend as a special guest and speak at Class Day, but he declined the speaking invitation. He did, however, provide pen and ink drawings that the students could use for their event materials. Since Schulz was living in California at the time, the students were able to visit his studio and pick up the drawings directly. The original artwork is now part of the Stanford Alumni Association collection.

The items shared from the 2016 reunion are a fun example of how Peanuts continues to be part of personal memories and special events. The Charlie Brown button received an update for the reunion, replacing the original logo with the class year, while the table decorations helped celebrate the history behind the 1966 event. Discovering unusual Peanuts collectibles like these gives fans a chance to learn more about the many ways Charles Schulz’s characters have been used and appreciated over the years.
