Charles Schulz’s Autograph

In the mid-1990’s, my family went to Santa Rosa, California. While I attempted to get Charles Schulz’s autograph at the Warm Puppy Cafe, I was unsuccessful. I went home with my copy of “You Don’t Look 35, Charlie Brown” unsigned. Years later, fate would remedy that problem three times.

Deep Dive into Charles Schulz’s Autograph

One of the things I love about collecting Peanuts items is the stories that come with them. Sometimes the history behind a collectible is just as interesting as the item itself, and sometimes the biggest surprises are hiding right in your own collection. This is the story of how I ended up with multiple signed copies of the same Peanuts book by Charles Schulz.

Back in the mid-1990s, my mom had a business trip in the San Francisco area, and my dad and I flew out there for the weekend. I brought along a special Peanuts hardcover book because I was hoping I might get the chance to meet Charles Schulz and have him sign it. We went up to Santa Rosa and stopped by the Warm Puppy Cafe, where Schulz was known to sometimes visit before working on the comic strip. Unfortunately, he wasn’t there that day, and I went home without a signed book. Years later, I found a copy of the same book signed by Charles Schulz at an auction and was thrilled to add it to my collection.

Then, years after that, I was going through some books from another collection I had purchased and opened up this same title, only to discover another signed copy that I had owned all along. This one had a personal inscription from Charles M. Schulz to Marilyn, along with a photo connected to the original owner. It was a great reminder to always check your collectibles carefully because you never know what you might find hiding in your own collection. This book was already special to me because it was one of the first major Peanuts hardcover books I owned when I was a young collector, but now it has an even more special place on my bookshelf because I have three copies connected to Charles Schulz himself.
