What a rollercoaster! We’re discovering the joys and pitfalls of this Snoopy Dancing Doll together. Delight in the sound-activated dancing from this 30+ year old doll made by Determined Productions for Japan. Shout “Always remove the batteries” in solidarity for my struggle to restore yet another Peanuts collectible. Finally, remember to always read the directions, even if they’re in Japanese.
I’m taking a closer look at a vintage Snoopy dancing doll from Japan, given to me as a thoughtful thank-you gift from the Margolin sisters at Midwest Collector Fest. When I first received it, this piece was a complete mystery. I had never encountered this particular Determined Productions Snoopy doll before and had no idea how it worked.
After examining the original packaging, I confirmed it was manufactured by Determined Productions and likely dates prior to 1994 based on the copyright details. Overall, the doll was in great shape with soft fur and only a few minor spots that needed cleaning—but the real test was whether his internal mechanics still worked.
Opening Snoopy up revealed a battery compartment and a small internal switch that had come loose from its housing. While the package instructions outlined how the toy was meant to operate, I quickly spotted a much bigger issue: heavily leaked vintage batteries inside.
Corroded battery terminals are one of the most common problems toy collectors face with vintage electronics. This project was a great reminder to always remove batteries before storing collectible toys! To fix the issue, I carefully cleaned the corrosion using lemon juice and Q-tips, taking extra care around the delicate wiring.
After about 20 minutes of careful cleaning and minor repairs, Snoopy officially came back to life! As it turns out, this rare Japanese Peanuts doll is sound-activated, meaning he dances along to music rather than just moving on a continuous loop.
I tested him out with a few different tracks—ranging from heavier rock music to Vince Guaraldi’s classic Peanuts theme, “Linus and Lucy.” While he had a bit of trouble keeping up with modern beats, seeing him move again was incredible. Restoring vintage Peanuts electronic toys takes a little extra patience, but bringing a rare Determined Productions collectible back to life is always worth the effort.
