Buyer Beware! AI Generated Snoopy Ornaments

Facebook and Instagram are getting FLOODED with AI generated Peanuts ornaments this holiday season. Let’s take a look at I see when looking at these photos. Feel free to bring your own experience into the comments!

RED FLAGS

The original Facebook ad. Four photos of four different ornaments. All of them in the same-ish pose, yet all distinctly different. These appear to be 3-D figural ornaments. The ornaments are $11.80 when I click through to the website. Let’s look at the red flags.

 1) The brand for this particular ad is Lisafun, yet the website it’s linking to is GNOSISI, which you can see on the left under the photos.

2) The inconsistency of the poses. When you see these types of things in real life, it’s one pose. That base figurine is then recolored for each of the different teams.

3) The amount of detail included in these ornaments is very, very high. Yet the text on the gloves is a muddy mess.

4) The inconsistency in the uniform design. All the hats have a slightly different brim texture. The skates all have different blades. The gloves are different. The sticks are different. NHL hockey players do not wear stocking hats.

5) Clicking through to the website, we can see how many more varieties they have and the low, low price of just $12 for this ornament that appears to be 3-D from the mockup. NOTE – it says Snooopy, not Snoopy. What real, licensed property would misspell Snoopy?

Plus, free shipping over $39.9. Not $39.90, but $39.9.

6) However, if we scroll way, way, WAY down the page, we’ll see that this is a flat, printed ornament that’s just 3 inches and made of acrylic. Did you think it was a 2-D flat ornament?  7) Get more details on the Safe Checkout? Clicking through to get more information just reloads the page and doesn’t actually give more information. It’s just a BS graphic made to fool people into thinking the site is secure.8) The Intellectual Property Page exists. They already know they’re violating copyright and have to get ahead of it. Also, the email address is for a different site that has Snoooopy merchandise.

For comparison, here’s the NHL site’s copyright page. Made by lawyers, it speaks like a lawyer and takes it seriously. Also, it’s a large site with social functions, so I can see the need for the NHL to have such a disclaimer.

9) Also available, Mappy Christ Joy! Or would you rather have the one where Snooopy is Mary?

Real NHL Ornaments

For comparison, Hallmark ornaments for 3-D NHL characters. For $13, this is the level of detail that you should expect. Also, note how there’s a consistency between figures that have just been recolored for the different teams. Be realistic when you see low prices for “high quality” goods.

But wait! There’s more!

Well, it’s not just one site, but many, many sites creating knock-off Peanuts ornaments. For instance, the site I found today’s thumbnail at. Here’s a discussion on it from Facebook pointing out how to spot the AI artifacts.

They also are stealing the intellectual property of FOCO.

FAKE:

 REAL – $40 and 4.5″ tall bobblehead

There are tons of ads out there with knock-offs and AI mock-up products on Facebook and Instagram. Below is a small sample. Did you know you can look at all the ads on Meta? I certainly did.

Also be careful of pages like “Snoopy Lovers” and “Snoopy Peace and Love” running ads. Just because it says Snoopy doesn’t mean it’s associated with the official Peanuts Worldwide.

Plus, these products are all over eBay, Etsy and other reseller sites. Be careful out there! When in doubt, do some research or ask your fellow fans.

Why you should care

Don’t get ripped off. Don’t pay over $10 for a cheap acrylic ornament when you were shown a 3-D figural ornament. That’s bait and switch. They bury the details on the page. Will they honor their “money back guarantee”?

You’re providing your information to a company that is already breaking the law. Will your payment and other details be safe? Will you be further scammed?

Finally, you don’t know what these are really made of. Is there lead? Are there harmful chemicals? Official products have to meet standards. If they’re sold and found to be toxic, there’s recourse. How can you hold this fly-by-night company accountable if their product is unsafe?

What if legit companies start doing this? What if they just spit out new and various AI created items without any thought put into them. Do we want to live in that world? Do we need that much stuff? Is that the next level of consumption? Buried in an avalanche of hyper-specific, one-off, soulless memorabilia.

What you can do

Spread the word! Take a screenshot and let people know it’s a scam. Leaving comments on the original ad will probably just get deleted and will increase engagement. Report the ad as a scam to the platform.

Report the violation. info@peanuts.com can be used to send copyright violations to. Let them know you want the real thing! You can also reach out to other brands that are being violated like the NHL and FOCO.

Buy the REAL DEAL! Buy real Peanuts ornaments, like from CollectPeanuts.com. Sure, maybe it isn’t a 2024 Dodgers Championship ornament, but a human put their time and energy into producing the ornament based on your favorite character. They brought it to life, not an algorithm.

Follow-up

If you buy one or receive one as a gift, please send a photo! I would love to see the side by side comparison, but I don’t want to support these companies. No shame if you buy one, it happens. I really hope you bought Mappy Christ Joy.
